On Tuesday, the place where a group of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Nafiu Bala was supposed to hold its national convention was empty, with no delegates or party officials in sight.
The convention was supposed to take place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, but the stadium was still empty when it was supposed to start.
A TV Platinum correspondent who was following the event on Facebook said that there were no preparations or activities going on and that some important parts of the complex, like the velodrome, were locked.
The ADC is still having trouble with its leadership, with Bala and another group led by former Senate President David Mark both claiming to be in charge of the party.
Bala’s group had set April 21, 2026, as the date for its convention. This was just days after they turned down the April 14 convention planned by the other group, calling it a violation of a court ruling that was still in effect.
He had also questioned the validity of the previous convention, saying that the absence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that it was not officially recognized.
The fight has gotten worse since then, with both sides claiming to be the party’s leader and rightful leader before the 2027 general elections.
Justice Emeka Nwite is in charge of the Federal High Court, which is hearing the case right now because INEC won’t accept Bala as acting national chairman.
