“We’ve Seen Clear Evidence of Amupitan’s Partisanship” — Jibrin Ibrahim

Jibrin Ibrahim, a Senior Fellow at the Center for Democracy and Development, says there is a lot of proof that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, is biased.

Ibrahim, the head of the Premium Times Editorial Board, made this claim during an interview on ARISE Television’s “Prime Time” show, according to reports.

He says that even though the INEC Chairman is new, there have already been many signs of bias.

Ibrahim said that Amupitan’s actions, which were aimed at the main opposition party without a legal basis, are a clear example of partisanship that most senior lawyers in the country find unacceptable.

He said, “This shows that we have a partisan person who is here to do his master’s work.” He had strong opinions about the last election and showed them openly on X.

“I believe the head of INEC is still fairly new. He just got the job, but we’ve already seen a lot of evidence of partisanship in a short amount of time.

“His involvement in going after the main opposition party without a legal basis that most senior lawyers in this country think is wrong is what makes that okay.”

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) youth also protested at the INEC office in Yaba, Lagos.

Naija News says that the protest, which took place on Monday, called for Joash Amupitan, the head of the electoral body, to step down.

The protesters held signs that said things like “ADC is not for sale,” “Amupitan is already compromised,” and “Democracy is dialogue, not monologue.”

Adeola Olusi, the party’s national deputy youth leader, led the protest with security forces nearby.

Balarabe Rufai, the party’s national youth leader, said on 𝕏 on Monday that young people would protest in Lagos and Ogun. The protests were called “Operation Occupy INEC.”

The protest was supposed to start at 8:00 a.m. at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos.
