Peter Obi Sends Strong Message to Tony Nwoye After Minority Whip Emergence

Peter Obi, who used to be a presidential candidate for the Labour Party, says that Senator Tony Nwoye’s rise to the position of Minority Whip of the Senate is a chance to do more good for people.

Obi said this in a statement on Thursday, in which he asked Nwoye to use his new job to help people, especially the poor and suffering Nigerians.

The new Senate Minority Whip was told by the former Governor of Anambra State to stay dedicated to keeping Nigeria united, making sure its citizens are healthy, and moving the country forward.

“Dear younger brother, Distinguished Senator Tony Nwoye, congratulations on being elected as the Senate Minority Whip. This promotion gives you a bigger platform to keep helping people, especially the poor and suffering Nigerians who look to principled leaders for hope.

Obi wrote in a statement on his 𝕏 account, “Stay true to the unity of our dear country, the well-being of the people, and the progress of our nation toward a new Nigeria that is POssible.”

During the plenary on Wednesday, it was brought up that Tony Nwoye, who represents Anambra North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, was chosen as the new Minority Whip of the Senate.

After Senator Osita Ngwu left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC on Wednesday, the Senate minority caucus unanimously chose Nwoye to take over.

Senator Nwoye ran for the Senate in 2023 as a member of the Labour Party (LP) but switched to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in late 2025.
