Abaribe Dumps ADC For Labour Party In Abia

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has reportedly dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC), four months after joining the party. The Abia South lawmaker is said to have joined the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Abia State Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Emenike Iroegbu, disclosed the reported switch, saying the veteran senator has joined the party.

Abaribe’s recent move is another chapter in a political career punctuated by strategic realignments and changing party platforms.

The senator was rumoured to have defected to the ADC in December last year after dumping the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) which he used to win re-election in the 2023 polls. His time with the ADC appears to have lasted only a few months before the latest reported move.

Abaribe spent most of his political career in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with which he entered the Senate in 2007, before his spells in APGA and ADC.

He is currently in his fifth term as the representative of Abia South Senatorial District and remains one of the leading political figures in the state.

The reported defection to the Labour Party is likely to alter political equations in Abia South, especially as parties make early moves for the 2027 elections.

There are also growing calls in some parts of the constituency for power rotation and fresh representation after Abaribe’s long stay in the Senate.

At the time of filing this report, the senator had not issued a personal statement confirming or denying the latest defection.
