Abia Assembly Seeks Justice for Slain Nursing Student Wendy Achumba

The Abia State House of Assembly has condemned the rape and murder of a female nursing student, Wendy Achumba, in Obowo, Imo State.

On 22nd May 2026, the late Miss Achumba, a 21-year-old student of Our Lady of Mercy Nursing scho5ol was raped and slain in her off-campus residence in Umuadara, Umulogho, Obowo, Local Government Area.

A member of the Abia State House of Assembly, Ucheonye Stephen, on Tuesday moved a motion of urgent public importance seeking speedy justice for the victim, a native of Obingwa LGA of Abia State.

He applauded the efforts of security agencies and community stakeholders that led to the arrest of suspects of the crime and urged for the speedy conclusion of all investigations into the matter.

Ucheonye also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police and the Imo State Police Command and all security agencies to ensure a transparent, thorough and diligent investigation and prosecution of all persons found culpable.

The lawmaker called on the Imo State government and other relevant authorities to intensify security surveillance around educational institutions, students’ hostels and off-campus accommodations.

The Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, reacted to the motion saying that the loss of young adults is an experience nobody would wish to have.

The murder case is still under investigation but the House will hold an audience with Governor Alex Otti over the matter, he said.
