Democracy Day: US Shuts Embassies in Lagos and Abuja

The United States announced the closure of its Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria, offices.

This was disclosed in a notice on Friday by the US Mission Nigeria.

The closure is in observance of the June 12, Democracy Day holiday.

The U.S. Nigeria Mission said, “In commemoration of the Democracy Day holiday, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 12, 2026.

The Nigerian government had declared Friday a public holiday.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his democracy day message on Friday, said Nigerians should not stop believing in the country despite her challenges.
