Despite Threats, Protests Break Out In Lagos

The nationwide protest against hardship and hunger in the country slated for August 1 kickstarted on Thursday morning from the Ikeja Under-bridge, Lagos, with heavy presence of security agents accompanying the protesters.

The development comes amid earlier threats issued by some unknown persons and traditionalists, warning residents against street protests against the administration of President Bola Tinubu over the prevailing economic situation in the country.

The Ikeja protesters are presently at the Allen Roundabout heading to the Alausa Secretatriat through the designated routes to the agreed rendezvous of the protest at Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota and the Freedom Park in Ketu areas of Lagos.

While the situation at the Lekki Tollgate seemed quiet as there was no presense of protesters on the ground as at the time of this report, there was, however, heavy presence of armed security agents and armoured tanks stationed around both sides of the Lekki Tollgate apparently in show of force.

So far, there was a relative calm around the highbrow Ikoyi and the Victoria Island parts of the state.

Meanwhile, another group of pro-government protesters showed up at the Lagos State Government Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, in solidarity with the government.
