A driver allegedly driving recklessly killed three persons, including a couple and a male passenger along the Ogijo-Sagamu Expressway in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State on Thursday.

PUNCH Metro gathered from the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, on Sunday, that the incident occurred at about 9 pm on the said day.

She added that the accident involved a Foton truck, a Space Wagon car, and a motorcycle.

She stressed that eyewitness accounts indicated that the two vehicles and the motorcycle were heading in the same direction when the truck driver, who was driving recklessly, lost control and rammed into the motorcycle leading to a further collision with the Space Wagon car.

The PPRO noted that the impact of the collision led to the motorcycle driver, his wife, and a passenger in the Space Wagon car sustaining a high degree of injuries.

She said, “The incident involved a Foton truck with the registration number EKY 778 XM, for which the driver’s name and address are currently unknown; a Space Wagon car with the registration number AM 299 AHD, driven by one Wahab Ogunyemi, and a Bajaj motorcycle with the registration number JGB 265 WG, ridden by one Moses Ekpolo, a 25-year-old, along with his 19-year-old wife, Josephine Ekpolo.

“The vehicles and the motorcycle were heading in the same direction going out from Ogijo inward Sagamu. Notable with recklessness, the driver of the Foton truck suddenly lost control, leaving his lane and colliding with the motorcycle from behind, causing it to hit the Space Wagon car simultaneously

“Tragedy met the motorcycle rider who was said to have maintained a steady speed, his wife, and a passenger in the Space Wagon, Kolawole Moshood, a 44-year-old from Agura Gberigba, Ikorodu, Lagos State, all suffered serious injuries.”

She stressed that the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were confirmed dead. The bodies of the deceased were deposited in the same hospital’s morgue.

“They were promptly taken to the Idera Private Hospital in Sagamu, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival. Their bodies have been transferred to the Idera Mortuary in Sagamu.”

While condoling with the deceased’s families, Odutola warned motorists to ensure they abide by safety precautions while driving on the highway.

“Drivers must understand the importance of safety when driving on the expressway so that avoidable losses such as this will be avoided.

“The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and prayed that God grant them the fortitude to bear the loss,” Odutola concluded.

PUNCH Metro reported last Monday that a yet-to-be-identified driver was arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority for ramming into a pedestrian and causing bodily injuries in the Mile 2 area of the state.

The LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, had told PUNCH Metro that the driver had sped through a bust section of the road leading to the collision with the pedestrian.

He added that operatives of the LASTMA who were at the scene of the accident swiftly rescued the victim to a nearby hospital in the area.
