The Federal High Court in Lagos, on Tuesday, granted a Lagos-based businessman, Ayodeji Oyenekan, a bail of N10m for alleged unlawful interception of digital infrastructure.
Oyenekan was arraigned by the Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police, on Tuesday, before Justice Akintayo Aluko on three counts of cybercrime.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr. M.Y. Bello, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in February 2022.
He alleged that Oyenekan, without authorisation, intentionally intercepted a digital infrastructure server hosted by Amazon Web Services, belonging to Meplaylist Classic Entertainment.
The prosecution claimed that the defendant caused the company to suffer a loss by altering the Amazon Web Services, thereby preventing Meplaylist Classic Entertainment from accessing its server.
The court was also informed that the defendant allegedly inputted his email address, [email protected], and used the opportunity to build a mobility startup called Hellobikee to gain economic benefits for himself.
The defendant was further alleged to have fraudulently used the electronic unique identification feature of Meplaylist through his email for personal economic gain.
According to the prosecutor, the offence committed contravened Sections 12(1), 16(1), and 22(2)(a) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention) Act, 2015.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Consequently, Justice Aluko granted the defendant bail of N10m, with one surety in like sum.
The court ordered that the defendant remain in custody at the correctional centre until all bail conditions were met.
The case was adjourned to January 21, 2025, for the commencement of trial.
