A Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting in Ebute-Metta, on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced a 32-year-old man, Jibril Idenyi, to two years and six months imprisonment for stealing property valued at N9.8m.
Magistrate Oluwatosin Erinle sentenced him after he was found guilty of the offence of stealing and receiving stolen property.
Idenyi was arraigned on March 5, 2024, on four counts of conspiracy, stealing, and receiving of stolen property brought against him, by the police.
During the arraignment, the police prosecutor, Inspector Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the convict and others now at large conspired to commit the offences.
Osuji said the incident took place on March 19, 2023, at about 2 p.m., at No 33, Agabi Adiesu Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State.
The prosecutor said the convict stole three Mikano generators valued at N9m, property of Green Nigeria Limited.
He also told the court that Idenyi, on the same day, stole one Honda motorcycle valued at N500,000 and a 40-inch plasma television valued at N300,000, all properties of Green Nigeria Limited.
According to the prosecutor, the offences committed contravened Sections 411 and 287, of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.
However, the convict pleaded guilty, and the trial began.
At the end of the trial, parties filed their final written addresses, and the court fixed December 17, 2024, for the judgment.
Delivering the judgment on Tuesday, Erinle struck out counts one and four, but sentenced him, on counts two and three.
She handed down two years imprisonment on count two and six months imprisonment on count three and held that the term of the sentence was to begin from August 8, 2023, when he was arrested.
The magistrate added that the convict’s sentence was to run concurrently.
Idenyi is to serve his sentence at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.
