A retired Upper Shari’a Court Judge, Mahmoud Shehu, was, on Tuesday, granted bail by a Magistrate Court sitting in Zaria, Kaduna State over allegations of assaulting a blind housewife.

The court, presided over by Senior Magistrate, Ibrahim Adamu Salisu, granted Shehu bail on the condition that he provides two sureties who are civil servants on Grade level 10, and deposits N100,000.

The sureties must also provide their promotion letters, passport photographs, full addresses, and phone numbers and if Shehu fails to meet these conditions, he will be remanded at the correctional facility until the next hearing date, set for February 11, 2025.

Shehu was re-arraigned on charges of forcefully entering the victim’s home, using force, and assaulting her, contrary to Sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State 2017.

According to the prosecutor, Adamu Abubakar, the incident occurred on September 6, 2024, when Shehu allegedly locked the main gate of the victim’s home, followed her into her room, and assaulted her, along with two other women who tried to intervene.

The victim reportedly required medical attention at the PHC Tudun Wada as a result of the assault. Shehu, however, denied committing the offence when questioned by the court.

The case was initially filed on September 10, 2024, at the Magistrate Court, Tudun Wada, Zaria, but after several adjournments, the Presiding Judge, Senior Magistrate Lukman Sidi, withdrew from the case and transferred it to the Chief Magistrate Court 1 Chediya for reassignment.
