Police bust FCT drug havens, recover illicit substances

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command, through its Anti-Narcotics Unit, has dismantled illegal drug spots in a coordinated operation across Abuja.

The operation which was conducted on Thursday, targeted areas notorious for drug sales and consumption in the nation’s capital.

The raided areas are Gwagwalada at the SDP Junction under the bridge, where operatives recovered 100 rounds of live 7.62 x 39 ammunition, similar raids occurred in Lugbe Federal Housing near the Tipper Garage, Wuse Zone 5 by Access Bank, and AYA Roundabout.

The FCT police command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the raids to our correspondent.

She added that a total of eight suspects were arrested during the raid.

Adeh said, “On January 23, 2025, police operatives of the FCT Command from the Anti-Narcotics Unit, successfully carried out a series of coordinated raid operations targeting identified hotspots within the Federal Capital Territory known to be used by criminal elements for the sale and consumption of illicit drugs and substances.

The areas covered during the raids include: Gwagwalada, SDP Junction, Under Bridge, where a total of 100 rounds of live 7.62 x 39 ammunition were recovered, Lugbe Federal Housing, by Tipper Garage, Wuse Zone 5, by Access bank and AYA roundabout.

“During the raid, the suspects sighted police operatives and took to their heels. They were given a hot chase and eight suspects were arrested while the following suspects were recovered from them.”

Adeh added that 100 rounds of live 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, a large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis and a large quantity of illicit drugs” were recovered.
