Obasa Takes Legal Action Against Mojisola Meranda, Lagos Assembly

Mudashiru Obasa, the Lagos State House of Assembly’s impeached Speaker, has sued the Lagos State High Court to be reinstated as Speaker immediately.
Peoples Gazette was able to get court documents that support Obasa’s assertion that on January 13, 2025, he was forcibly removed from office.
Lasbat Mojisola Meranda, the current Speaker, and the Lagos State House of Assembly are named as defendants in the lawsuit, which was filed on February 14, 2025.
The lawsuit comes after multiple unsuccessful attempts to resolve the leadership situation through political discussions between Lagos and Abuja. Lawmakers apparently fear possible revenge from the impeached Speaker if he returns to office, despite President Bola Tinubu’s order that Obasa be reinstated.

Obasa claimed in his lawsuit that the plenary session that led to his impeachment was illegally held during the Assembly’s recess without the required authority, and he contested its legitimacy.

According to the filing: “The action challenged the Lagos State House of Assembly’s sitting and procedures to sit during recess without calling the House back or granting any other person the authority to call the House back.”

According to Mr. Obasa, the meeting broke the 1999 Constitution’s Sections 36, 90(2)(c), 101, and 311 (as amended), as well as the Lagos State House of Assembly’s Standing Orders and Rules, particularly Order V Rule 18(2) and Order II Rule 9(i-viii).

According to sources, despite President Tinubu’s resolute position, the leadership issue has gotten worse. Furious that Obasa’s reinstatement was taking so long, Tinubu recently refused to meet with the Lagos APC’s Governance Advisory Council (GAC) members, claiming they were disobeying his orders.

Opposition inside the party is still fierce, though. In response to the call for Obasa’s restoration, GAC member Muraina Akanbi Taiwo declared: “Moves to reinstate Mr. Obasa would be rejected.” Mr. Tinubu is not the state’s god.
