Rivers State Governor Similayi Fubara is not an Ijaw man, according to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.
According to reports, Wike mentioned this to the Kalabari people during a banquet held in his honor on Saturday.
In a media appearance in Abuja on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Wike talked about Fubara and asserted that an Ijaw guy would not have been able to become governor of Rivers State without his backing.

Wike reiterated, however, in a Saturday speech to the Kalabaris that Fubara is not Ijaw and that people shouldn’t be misled.

“Don’t let anyone fool you that the governor is Ijaw; he isn’t,” he remarked. Are you getting any benefits? You’re all Ijaw. Interest is what politics is.

“You claim it’s politics, but we have to come up with a statement that people shouldn’t act in such a way, treat others poorly, and then abandon them. That politics must end.

In response to the present political unrest in Rivers State, Uwemedimo Nwoko, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Attorney-General of Akwa Ibom State, has stated that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is forced to follow the Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter.

Nwoko claimed that the governor has never shown any intention of defying the court’s decision, calling President Bola Tinubu’s order to PANDEF leaders to counsel Fubara on compliance needless in an interview with Vanguard on Friday.

“In my opinion, Fubara has no choice, thus the recommendation that it should follow the Supreme Court’s ruling is superfluous. However, by making such an advisory, the President is speaking as the nation’s father and attempting to demonstrate his interest in upholding the rule of law, Nwoko said.
