For his remarks regarding the canceled June 12, 1993 presidential election, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has drawn harsh criticism from Solid Minerals Development Minister Dele Alake. In a recent television appearance, Lamido said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was in favor of the election being canceled and that Tinubu’s mother, the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, had brought market women to Abuja to show support for the military ruling party. He further asserted that the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) was established to support the late General Sani Abacha rather than to fight for June 12.

In response, Alake brushed off Lamido’s claims as untrue and a misrepresentation of history. As the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) secretary, he charged Lamido of complicity in violating the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola’s directive. Lamido and the then-SDP chairman, according to Alake, sold off Abiola’s victory by agreeing to the establishment of the National Interim Government (NIG) following the annulment of the election.
Alake emphasized the part Tinubu played in the June 12 contest, pointing out that Tinubu helped to guarantee Abiola’s candidacy at the SDP convention in Jos. He disclosed that Tinubu made it possible for MKO to become the party’s flagbearer by negotiating a deal that persuaded Atiku Abubakar to resign in favor of Abiola.
Lamido’s accusations are lies straight out of hell, according to Alake, who called his comments revisionist. In the betrayal of June 12, he is attempting to hide his own involvement. He added that Tinubu’s mother merely wanted to ask Abacha to reinstate Abiola’s mandate.
