Police Move to Uncover Root of Palace Violence Involving Sanusi, Bayero Camps

The Kano State Police Command has formed a panel to look into the violent altercation that broke out between followers of Aminu Ado Bayero, the ousted 15th Emir of Kano, and Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir who was reinstalled, in the Kofar-Kudu neighborhood of Kano city.
Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, the Commissioner of Police, has ordered a thorough inquiry into the altercation, according to SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command’s public relations officer, who confirmed the situation to Punch on Monday.

Haruna told Punch over WhatsApp that a panel had been established by the CP, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, to look into the altercation.

Details are still unclear, but it was stated that on Sunday, Emir Bayero’s caravan tried to cross the Kofar-Kudu axis on their way from his Mandawari home to the Nassarawa mini-palace.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to the platform, Bayero’s group ran into strong opposition from potential Emir Sanusi supporters, which caused property damage and injuries to palace guards.

A local who was present at the altercation disclosed that thugs allegedly damaged police cars, injured palace guards, and vandalized the Gidan Rumfa Palace’s main gate.

The witness stated that policemen quickly used tear gas to disperse the opposing groups, preventing the incident from turning into a full-fledged, bloody altercation.

After the Kano State Government decided in May 2024 to remove Emir Bayero and install Emir Sanusi II in his place, the fight is the most recent in a long-running struggle for royal authority.

The two kings have since been ruling from different palaces, Bayero in the Nassarawa mini-palace and Sanusi at the main palace in Gidan Rumfa, while political unrest and court disputes still plague the emirate.
