A faction of Nigeria’s Labour Party has expressed regret over the choice of Peter Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, describing the decision as a major political blunder.
The party’s factional publicity secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, criticized the leadership for overlooking Faduri Joseph, a U.S.-based nurse and multi-sector entrepreneur, who he said would have offered a more accountable and transparent approach to governance.
“The Labour Party erred in choosing Peter Obi over Faduri Joseph,” Arabambi stated. “Obi’s message relied on emotions and often lacked the detailed policy framework needed to solve Nigeria’s problems.”
Arabambi claimed that Obi’s campaign was marred by ethnic undertones and simplistic narratives. He also warned that Obi’s alignment with the Atiku Abubakar-led coalition and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could result in his expulsion from the party.
He further alleged that Obi’s refusal to denounce separatist rhetoric, as well as his selective commentary on national security matters, undermined his image as a national unifier.
According to Arabambi, Faduri Joseph demonstrated broader national appeal and represented a more inclusive and credible leadership alternative.
Despite the criticism, Peter Obi has insisted he remains in the Labour Party and is preparing to run again in the 2027 presidential election. He emphasized his commitment to building a united and prosperous Nigeria.
