According to Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, some politicians have tried to use former President Goodluck Jonathan against Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, in order to win the 2027 election.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Tanko reportedly revealed this, saying that the two leaders’ meeting on Thursday was not unexpected.
Although Peter Obi and Jonathan are formidable candidates, Tanko acknowledged that the Obidients would rather the former president resign in favor of the former Anambra State governor.
“They have had a long-standing friendship,” he stated. Their purpose was to get together and talk about ways to save Nigeria.
Both of them are formidable candidates, but for us, Jonathan continuing to be the statesman for whom he is known would be ideal. He deserves respect and has done his best as president; it is his moment to stand behind his brother.
When Jonathan was president, Obi supported him and was a member of his economic management team. Now is the moment for Jonathan to stand behind Obi.
We are aware of attempts by certain politicians to use Jonathan against Peter Obi, but we are adamant that their plans would fail. For fairness, many Nigerians think the South East should have a chance to elect the country’s future president. Peter Obi is the most suitable applicant.
In the meantime, one of Jonathan’s aides stated: “It is only common sense for Obi to step down for him,” adding that the conversation on Thursday focused on 2027. It all comes down to finding the ideal balance, which Obi can sell to his group.
