Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been encouraged by John Azuta-Mbata, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, to be released by the federal government.
Azuta Mbata underlined that Kanu need to be freed so he can get the right medical attention.
He made this plea in a short video clip that was distributed to reporters on Thursday.
Kanu was first taken into custody in 2015 on suspicion of a treasonous offense.
Before being controversially detained again in Kenya in June 2021 by Nigerian security forces, he had skipped bail in 2017 and fled the country.
Since then, he has been under the custody of DSS, the Department of State Services.
The nation had nothing to gain from keeping Kanu in jail, thus Azuta Mbata asked the federal government to look into a political solution.
“The government has no serious advantage in keeping him,” he said. It is imperative that the government protects his welfare and safety and permits him to travel for medical care as soon as feasible.
“The administration needs to take a political approach to this problem. The government does not, in my opinion, have a compelling reason to hold him any longer.
