Tinubu Is My Friend, Our Disagreement Is Political – Lamido

Sule Lamido, the former governor of Jigawa State, has stated that he will not support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, even if they have a personal relationship.
Lamido argues that all Nigerians are entitled to run for president and that there is nothing wrong with being honest with any of the candidates.

Despite political disagreements, the former governor, who is also a well-known member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated that politicians can meet to discuss the country’s situation.

He promised that his personal relationship would not compromise his dedication to the opposition parties’ efforts to preserve Nigeria and secure its progress.

According to reports, Lamido made the submission in a recent BBC interview.

His statement comes after he recently made a public appearance with President Tinubu at the wedding of the son of former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari in Kaduna, which caused a stir in Nigerian political circles.

Last week, former vice president Atiku Abubakar was also spotted in Lamido, where he maintained his acquaintance with Tinubu.

The former governor claimed that despite these, he has a long-standing friendship with both men that extends beyond their present political commitments.

“Atiku and I founded the PDP; I served as Foreign Affairs Minister while he served as Vice President. What’s wrong with Nigerians gathering to talk about the country’s situation? Lamido inquired.

Speaking about his recent public conversation and gist with President Tinubu, Lamido reaffirmed that his top priority is bringing Nigerians together to oppose Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government. The two were spotted mingling during their meeting at the Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna last Friday.

“He is now the President of Nigeria, and although we haven’t seen each other in a long time, we know each other very well,” he remarked.

“You look nice,” I said to him. “Is that how you have changed?” he asked me as well. I adore you, Sule, since you are reliable. We departed after laughing.

According to him, the PDP is making every effort to address its internal problems and set itself up for success in upcoming elections.

“We’re talking to a lot of people who used to be together but are now split; it’s not just Atiku who has switched parties. We all want Nigeria to advance because we are Nigerians.

“There is no question that in order for Nigeria to advance, we are continuously involved, making sure that concessions are made when necessary, and keeping lines of communication open and consultative. We are working for the public, not for ourselves.

The former governor stated, “Not just me – every Nigerian has a right to the President, and if he is seen to be wrong, there is nothing wrong with telling him the truth.”
