INEC Lifts Ban on Campaigns for FCT Council Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has instructed political parties running in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections to launch public campaigns ahead of the election.

The campaigns will conclude on February 19, 2026, prior to the council elections, according to a statement from Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee.

He asserts that “public facilities must be made available to parties and candidates for media campaigns, outdoor advertising, and public rallies and meetings.”

Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which also forbids using incumbency to favor or disadvantage any party or candidate, was in compliance with the mandate, the commission said.

The FCT elections are scheduled for February 21, 2026, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
