Kwankwaso Refutes Defection Rumours Ahead of 2027 General Election

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso has declared that he has never made the decision to join the All Progressives Congress.

Kwankaso’s requirements for joining the APC for the general elections in 2027 have made headlines lately. He was among the party’s original members, and it was recently reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instructed him to rejoin the APC.

The former defense minister reportedly made formal overtures to the APC and had already started private conversations with the party’s national chairman, according to growing political rumors that surfaced early Friday morning.

Kwankwaso denied the allegations in a personally signed statement on Friday via his media staff, calling them “online statements” devoid of veracity or basis.

“We have received reports on the internet that we have sent in a letter of intent to join a political party in the nation,” the statement said.

We want to make it clear that we haven’t submitted anything of that nature to anyone. Therefore, it is recommended that the public follow the established official channels to be updated on any new developments pertaining to our situation,” he continued.

Political sources inside the APC said earlier Friday that Senator Kwankwaso had shown interest in joining the party in a “discreet” letter to the national secretariat.

Additionally, the stories alluded to continuing talks between Kwankwaso and the National Chairman of the APC, which sparked a flurry of reactions on social media and in party caucuses.

Even while no official letter has yet been exchanged, sources think both parties may be keeping channels of contact open as 2027 approaches and the APC is apparently considering a more extensive northern consolidation.

Kwankwaso insists that no action has been taken as of yet, but in Nigerian politics, denial and silence are frequently the quiet before a well-planned storm.
