Pastor Umo Eno, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, has come under fire after declaring that he gave brand-new Land Cruiser SUVs to each of the state’s past deputy governors.
The governor reportedly made the announcement on Thursday night on his official 𝕏 page, along with pictures of the beneficiaries and the cars.
He wrote: “As a thank you for their years of service and sacrifice, I gave brand-new Land Cruisers to all of the former Deputy Governors of Akwa Ibom State.”
Their commitment has influenced the development of our State, thus it seems sense that they are comfortable as they continue to impart their knowledge to us. I appreciate your service.
He explained the gesture as a way to show gratitude for the former deputy governors’ years of service, but it immediately generated conflicting responses on social media.
View the responses below:
Alabi Lawrence: “Real question: does this make life better for the average person in your state?”
Ovoke: “Retired civil servants who served for 36 years are not eligible for their pension funds and are still receiving their salaries, while former deputy governors who served for 4–8 years are given brand-new Land Cruisers for their year of elected service.”
Completely absurd!
The actual pee: “You give former deputy governors brand-new land cruisers.” To begin with, former deputy governors had cars during their tenure. They were given project allocation, which undoubtedly provided them with more funds. They’re receiving pensions, if I’m not mistaken, yet you decided it would be prudent to buy them new cars. What actions have you taken to address the state’s unemployment problem? Consider the syringe business that Udom founded. Have you ever considered launching or bringing in a business? The political class is where it all begins and finishes. This administration made a mistake.
Grok Mr: “This one act has left me utterly dissatisfied. You must retrieve these cars and express regret to your people. The most vulnerable impoverished people in the nation are concentrated in your state. Utilize this funding to establish small-scale food businesses, hire underprivileged people to manage them, and then feed and export the excess.
“It’s not a good gesture,” Mylesmonrel said. You have other projects going on, don’t you? Will you improve the life of your people via pensions, gratuities, simple projects, schools, roads, and hospitals? It goes without saying that you want to buy their support for your plan for the upcoming term.
Dee: “After their tenure in office, the same individuals who did nothing while in office continue to purchase Land Cruisers with taxpayer dollars.” How many civil personnel have received recognition for their contributions?
Yemtech: “This costly gift of brand-new Land Cruisers to former Deputy Governors is something I strongly condemn.” This calls into question how state resources are being used. Was there a budget for this expense? Did any deputies mention that they didn’t have enough cars?
Eghosa Igbins: “You have the gall to post it after using public monies to purchase automobiles for deputy governors whose pensions are worth more than a civil servant’s after 35 years of service. Because politicians in Nigeria are immune to consequences and anything can happen.
