The Nigerian federal government has been handed a 14-day ultimatum by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve outstanding issues.
According to reports, the decision was made by ASUU after a meeting of the National Executive Council was conducted at the University of Abuja on Sunday.
According to The PUNCH, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the national president of ASUU, stated this in a copy of the strike action that he personally signed.
The notice stated: “The Union criticized the government’s persistent disregard for its requests and the disregard for the University system during the National Executive Council meeting on September 28, 2025, which was held at the University of Abuja.
As a result, ASUU has given the Nigerian Federal Government a fourteen-day ultimatum to resolve these problems. The Union may be forced to start a two-week warning strike and then a full, indefinite strike if the Federal Government does not resolve these issues by the end of the fourteen-day ultimatum.
In an effort to maintain stability among universities, the Federal Government, acting through the Federal Ministry of Education, established a committee to investigate a proposal for ASUU. The committee was led by Abel Enitan, the permanent secretary of the ministry.
Renegotiating the 2009 agreement, providing sufficient finances for university revitalization, paying outstanding salary arrears, and establishing sustainable funding sources are still among ASUU’s demands.
