INEC Rejects Resignation of Rivers Ex-Lawmaker, Rules Out Bye-Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refused to hold a bye-election in Ahoada East Constituency 2 to replace Ehie Edison, a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who resigned.

In December 2023, Ehie, the factional Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, which consisted of five members who were loyal to Governor Fubara, resigned from both his office and membership.

Before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended the state legislature and administration on March 18, 2025, he was later named the governor’s chief of staff.

In response to the Governor’s reinstatement, other members of his administration’s executive branch, and members of the House of Assembly, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Gabriel Yomere, stated that the Commission rejected Edison Ehie’s resignation.

Speaking on a radio talk program on Tuesday, Yomere noted that the State House of Assembly had also rejected the former lawmaker’s resignation.

Before the year ended, in September 2023, the late Hon. Dinebary Loloo passed away.

He promised that all political parties will receive equal treatment from INEC.

“No political party will be given preferential treatment,” he said.
