Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president, has explained why he was unable to make any decisive steps to “fix” the issue plaguing the PDP.
Atiku claimed that since he was neither the National Chairman nor the National Secretary of the PDP, he was unable to make decisive decisions to improve the party.
The former vice president claimed in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday that he was unable to fix the party because the PDP’s national chairman and secretary don’t listen to him.
The PDP’s problem began in 2022 as the 2023 presidential election was approaching.
With its National Chairman hailing from the same area, the former ruling party had allocated its presidential ticket to the North.
Atiku became the PDP’s emergency presidential contender for the 2023 election as a result.
Some party chieftains were annoyed by Atiku’s emergency because the party had originally zoned its presidential ticket to the North.
Atiku and other party members defected to the opposition group African Democratic Congress, or ADC, as a result of the ongoing conflict.
Atiku, however, charged that the government, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), was funding individuals who wanted to dismantle the PDP.
“If I or someone who listens to me had been the party’s chairman or secretary, I could have made some firm decisions to fix the party.”
“Unfortunately, the individuals holding those positions have a variety of interests that are primarily personal to them,” he stated.
