Ex-Senate Minority Leader: PDP Will Replace Mutfwang If He Joins APC

Regardless of Governor Caleb Mutfwang defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in advance of the 2027 governorship contest, former Senate Minority Leader Simon Mwadkwon has stated his confidence that Plateau State will continue to be firmly under the grip of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In an interview with reporters in Jos on Thursday, Mwadkwon, who previously represented Plateau North in the National Assembly before being removed due to an Appeal Court decision, stated as much.

According to reports, there have been rumors in recent weeks that Governor Mutfwang is one of four PDP governors who are purportedly planning to join the APC in order to improve their electoral prospects.

Mwadkwon, however, brushed the rumors aside, pointing out that the governor had refuted them in public.

“I don’t think the Plateau State Governor has any interest in joining the APC because he has repeatedly stated in public that he has no intention of doing so. He has not backed down on this topic in spite of multiple appeals,” he stated.

The former congressman insisted that regardless of Mutfwang’s political future, Plateau’s political loyalty would always be based in the PDP.

He said, “Plateau is always a PDP state, and the people of the state know that their love for the PDP is unparalleled, whether the governor leaves the party or not.”

Mwadkwon urged the governor to remain in the PDP, but emphasized that even if he did leave, the party would support a strong candidate to win in 2027.

“The PDP would find a capable replacement for Gov. Mutfwang and the party would win,” he continued, if he chose to leave the party and run on a different platform. The only party that will act in his best interests is the PDP.
