In addition to raising the years of service for teachers from 35 to 40, Biodun Oyebanji, the governor of Ekiti State, has approved an immediate extension of the retirement age from 60 to 65.

During the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration on Sunday at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, the governor made the news.

Oyebanji also awarded N46 million in cash awards to exceptional teachers throughout the state as part of their efforts to recognize commitment and excellence in the teaching profession.

In order to keep seasoned teachers in the classroom and support the state’s education system, he clarified, the retirement age and years of service have been raised.

He added that a special committee will be established to supervise the implementation process and guarantee that the new policy would only benefit teachers who are in good physical and mental health.

Along with the prompt payment of unpaid 2019 leave bonus arrears, the governor also announced an increase in the allowances for department heads and science teachers.

“Our state’s future is founded on the shoulders of its teachers. In order to improve their well-being and inspire them to keep influencing the next generation, this program is a component of our shared prosperity agenda, Oyebanji stated.
