George Moghalu, a Labour Party candidate running for governor of Anambra State on Saturday, has explained why he lost his polling place.
In an appearance with “Sunday Politics,” a Channels Television program, Moghalu attributed his defeat in his polling unit on vote-buying by certain candidates.
He claimed that he declined to participate in vote-buying because he could not afford to match the sum of money that other candidates were giving voters.
He claims that because of their financial difficulties, a large number of voters at his voting place gave in to the lure of money.
Yes, since I was unable to pay the amount that was being paid. I was unable to pay, refused to pay, and declined to participate.
What do you expect my people to do when they have too much money to purchase votes? Many of them are impoverished, which is why they fell,” he remarked.
Moghalu especially charged that the All Progressives Grand Alliance, or APGA, the ruling party in Anambra, was primarily responsible for the purported vote-buying.
He disclosed that APGA party tags were seen on a number of party agents, some of whom had been arrested for purchasing votes.
It is known that several of them were observed buying votes.
“In my specific constituency, a commissioner was also caught on camera purchasing votes,” Moghalu continued.
