The Federal Government has opened diplomatic channels with the United States following recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened possible military action against Nigeria.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed the development in an interview with Sky News on Tuesday. He said both countries have initiated discussions aimed at easing tensions and clarifying misconceptions arising from Trump’s remarks.
“Channels of communication have been opened. I can confirm that we are talking with them, and I think they are beginning to understand the situation better,” Idris stated.
He noted that the Federal Government is addressing the issue through proper diplomatic engagement to correct what it described as “a misunderstanding” of Nigeria’s internal security challenges. The minister added that the U.S. government is now gaining a clearer understanding of the complexities of Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
Idris stressed that Nigeria has not lost any territory to Boko Haram, dismissing claims of government weakness. He alleged that some U.S.-based lobby groups linked to proscribed separatist movements have been spreading false information to mislead American officials.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with Washington and called for renewed cooperation in tackling terrorism.
Addressing allegations of religious persecution, Idris insisted that Nigeria remains a multi-faith nation where freedom of worship is constitutionally guaranteed.
Trump’s comments, made on his Truth Social platform on November 2, ordered the Pentagon to prepare for potential military action, accusing Nigerian authorities of failing to protect Christians. The U.S. president later reinforced his position aboard Air Force One, suggesting possible troop deployment or airstrikes.
Diplomatic observers have condemned Trump’s remarks as reckless and capable of destabilizing relations between both nations. The Nigerian government, however, has opted for calm diplomacy over confrontation in handling the matter.
