Baba-Ahmed Discloses Peter Obi’s Political Party
Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former Labour Party (LP) vice presidential candidate, denied widespread rumors that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi had left the party on Friday.
Following the party’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, which was attended by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Baba-Ahmed addressed reporters.
Reports claiming that Obi had abandoned the LP were criticized by the senior party figure, who said the allegation lacked standing.
To the best of our knowledge, His Excellency Peter Obi, our brother, is still a Labour Party member. Nothing has altered. He remarked, “I would have moved my seat to the left for him if he were here right now.
INEC’s participation was praised by the former vice presidential candidate, who described it as a symbolic victory for the party’s credibility.
“The presence of INEC, which validates this sitting and justifies our presence here, is the highlight and major turning point of this NEC meeting,” he stated.
“We completely adhere to the provisions of the law. He emphasized procedural compliance and continued, “As law-abiding citizens, we strictly adhere to what the law provides.”
“The Labour Party has not decreased in any way,” declared Baba-Ahmed. Our numbers have only grown.
He clarified, characterizing the NEC session as a renewed push for reconciliation. “We have gone through rough times, as is usual with political associations, and have emerged from it.”
Baba-Ahmed claimed that Nigeria’s political decisions were a major factor in the recent crises and the country’s growing insecurity.
Nigeria proclaimed a national emergency just two days ago. As you remember, we told Nigeria and the rest of the world that this was probably going to happen, and it is,” he stated.
He cited previous security lapses and said that an LP-led government would have prevented them.
“Nigerians voted in large numbers for change, and something else happened,” stated Baba-Ahmed. As a result, we witnessed hundreds of school kidnappings and the public execution of senior army leaders two days ago.
“If the Nigerian government had been formed by the Labour Party, these would never have occurred.”
Speaking on the wellbeing of workers, Baba-Ahmed stated that the LP is still committed to fair labor standards.
“It is the birthright of the Labour Party to ensure decent and realistic living wages for all workers; this will play a key role from now till 2027 and beyond,” he declared.
Months after the contentious 2024 Labour Party national convention in Nnewi, which led to a leadership split into opposing groups comprising prominent party figures, the NEC meeting on Friday is presided over by factional National Chairman Julius Abure.
