Why Tinubu Should Sack Matawalle, Minister of Police Affairs

Zagazola Makama, a security and counterinsurgency specialist, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fire Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defense.

According to reports, he made this demand after Abubakar Badaru, the Minister of Defense, resigned.

According to his resignation letter, dated December 1, 2025, the former Jigawa State Governor cited health grounds for his decision.

President Tinubu has accepted the resignation, thanked him for his service, and is anticipated to inform the Senate of a successor later this week, according to a State House letter on the subject signed by presidential spokeswoman Bayo Onanuga.

In response, Zagazola posted on 𝕏 and called for the dismissal of Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, the Minister of Police Affairs.

“When will Matawalle GO?” he wrote.

Nigeria’s security architecture is still plagued by both operational shortcomings and top-level leadership shortcomings.

“Many Nigerians are now questioning when those without demonstrable capacity in key national security positions will step aside for competent, experienced professionals to take charge.

The appointment of people who were generally thought to lack the depth, experience, and strategic insight necessary for such delicate posts was the Defense Minister’s first significant setback.

“The situation is no different in the Ministry of Police Affairs, where even the visibility and impact of the Minister, Sen. Ibrahim Gaidam, remain largely unknown to the public.

These are front-line ministries, not ceremonial portfolios, and they require seasoned, experienced leaders with track records in operational monitoring, security management, and institutional reforms.

“Without such competence at the helm, Nigeria’s fight against insecurity risks being undermined from within.”
