Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has denounced the purported giving of expensive cars to state coordinators of a political mobilization organization purportedly connected to the federal government.
In a statement sent on Thursday on his š Twitter, Obi called the development a “profound insensitivity” to the suffering of Nigerians.
In response to reports that state coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a political platform purportedly being mobilized ahead of the 2027 elections, received Toyota Land Cruiser jeeps, Hilux trucks, and Hummer buses as gifts from President Bola Tinubu, Obi stated the action demonstrated misguided priorities.
“The decision of any government to allocate limited public resources for distributing luxury vehicles is not only insensitive but also represents a serious moral failure at a time when Nigerians are struggling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity,” Obi said.
While millions struggle with poverty, Obi condemned the purported use of public funds for political theater.
“Those in leadership positions continue to flaunt their wealth by driving brand-new Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, and Hummers, while ordinary Nigerians are struggling with poverty and hopelessness,” he stated.
He claims that such behavior equates to “treating the public’s suffering as mere background for political theatrics.”
“This isn’t government. He continued, “It shows a deep lack of empathy and a betrayal of public confidence masquerading as a political ploy.
“Nigerians Need Food, Jobs, Security, Not Convoys” emphasized that genuine leadership should concentrate on resolving the nation’s urgent problems, such as hunger, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, and insecurity.
“In these difficult times, leadership should prioritize feeding the poor, guaranteeing that the sick have access to healthcare, giving millions of young people without jobs hope again, and protecting our neighborhoods. He stated, “It shouldn’t be about canvassing for votes or showing off fancy cars.
Noting that the reported vehicle giveaway is a “tragic misplacement of priorities,” the former governor of Anambra State also bemoaned the difficulties faced by Nigerian families, including as growing insecurity, maternal health issues, and school tuition.
