The government of Senegal announced on Tuesday that a student had died as a result of altercations between students and police at a university in the west African nation over unpaid stipends.
According to a statement, the disturbance started on Monday at the Sheikh Anta Diop University in the city, Dakar.
The government spokeswoman claimed in the statement that Abdoulaye Ba, a second-year medical student, died as a result.
Over the past few months, students at a number of Senegalese colleges have staged intermittent protests demanding payment of their stipends.
