Amid growing political tension in the nation, former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai has claimed that the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), may be planning his arrest.
El-Rufai, a former APC leader who is currently a leader of the opposition African Democratic Congress, reportedly said that some lawmakers were under pressure to either stay in the ruling party or defect.
The statements were made by him in an interview with BBC Hausa.
Although he has not been arrested, the former governor, who has recently stepped up his criticism of the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s administration, said that some of his close associates had already been taken into custody.
In the aforementioned interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai stated, “Four people we worked with in Kaduna have been arrested; so it’s only a matter of time before they come for me too,” according to Daily Trust.
His comments point to growing political hostility between the former governor and the party he defected from after eight years of service.
El-Rufai further claimed that political players were being pressured to support the APC, which is now in power.
He claims that the pressure being put on lawmakers is a component of a larger plan to silence critics before next elections.
This development coincides with the arrest and current prosecution of Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney General of the Federation.
Malami has been charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with offenses such as money laundering and official abuse.
He was later arrested again by authorities on suspicion of financing terrorism.
Having defected from the APC to the ADC, Malami is considered a prominent opposition figure to President Tinubu. He has disputed the accusations, calling them a political witch-hunt.
