Following a significant financial intervention by the Taraba State government, the ongoing issue at Taraba State University (TSU), which prompted academic staff to go on an indefinite strike, may soon be resolved.
The state governor, Agbu Kefas, personally visited the university campus in Jalingo, the state capital, on Thursday and announced the approval of N3 billion to settle outstanding entitlements owing to staff unions. This development became apparent.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, branch of the school has been on strike for a long time, and the intervention is largely regarded as a significant step toward ending that strike.
The governor authorized the immediate release of N200 million as part of the settlement while speaking to university community members. Additionally, he approved N100 million in monthly payments starting in April, which he claims will go on until the accumulated arrears are paid in full.
In the presence of union leaders, including ASUU Chairman Dr. Mbave Joshua Garba, Kefa, the university’s visitor, was seen to have also signed documents approving the disbursement of the monies in a symbolic demonstration of his adherence to the arrangement.
After months of interruption due to the industrial action, members of the university community have welcomed the intervention and described it as a positive step toward returning to regular academic activity.
The university unions’ Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called a congress meeting to discuss the government’s proposal.
In order for lectures and other academic activity to continue, observers anticipate that the unions will think about calling off the strike.
Nonetheless, a few presenters pointed out that the conclusion of the congress will determine the ultimate choice.
The development is anticipated to stabilize Taraba State University’s academic calendar and provide relief to thousands of students whose studies have been halted by the conflict if the strike is ultimately called off.
