Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has called on leaders, aspirants and supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to desist from destructive politics.
In a statement on Wednesday, Shettima made the call, urging all and sundry to exercise restraint and maintain party unity as political consultations for the 2027 general elections kick off.
In a statement titled “2027: Don’t Pull Down the Roof”, the Vice President compared the APC to a family that should not tear down its own house over internal ambitions.
“The political season is here and democracy is in its usual fever. Consultations have started in the wards, local government, party offices and private homes,” he said.
“The political season is upon us again. We don’t need to bring the roof down. We all need to stop destructive politics.
“Aspirants are making calls, elders are receiving visits, supporters are counting delegates, and the marketplace of ambition is alive again.
“This is a sign that our democracy is still alive. It is evidence that power in our republic is still a thing to be negotiated, fought over, argued for and earned. But every political season brings its own temptations.
“It carries the lure to mistake dissent for treason, rivalry for hostility, choice for rejection and media interpretation for fact,” the statement read in part.
