Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha and former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, have emerged as top contenders for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice presidential ticket.
Consultations over who will run with the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, are at the final stage, sources in the party told The Whistler.
The party is considering a number of factors before selecting a running mate, a source familiar with the discussions said.
“They are looking at different factors including political strength, regional calculations and acceptability across the country, the source said.
Amaechi, who later contested the ADC presidential primary, was said to have come second to Atiku with 509,397 votes.
But he has declined to accept the initial outcome, citing irregularities and widespread disenfranchisement.
Ihedioha, who has both legislative and executive experience as a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-governor of Imo State, is also being considered.
Some party chieftains see Duke, who governed Cross River State between 1999 and 2007, as a candidate who can rally support from beyond the traditional party lines but questions remain about his current political strength.
Atiku emerged as the ADC presidential candidate with 1,846,370 votes in the party’s primary election.
The former vice president served under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999-2007 and has made several previous attempts to become president.
He also contested or sought the office in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023.
Atiku has described the 2027 race as his “last outing”.
