Oshoala fires Barcelona past Man City in Champions League clash
Super Falcons skipper, Asisat Oshoala, was involved in two goals on Wednesday as Barcelona defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie in Spain.
The Nigerian scored the first Barcelona goal and won the penalty that led to the second to give the Spanish side a big first-leg advantage.
Oshoala, who has previously played in England for Arsenal and Liverpool, opened scoring in the 35th minute when she smashed the ball in from the edge of the Manchester City box.
The goal was Barcelona’s 100th since they started participating in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The first half ended 1-0 but Barcelona piled on the pressure to increase their lead.
Their dominance paid off eight minutes after the break when Mariona Caldentey scored from the penalty spot. The penalty was awarded following a foul on Oshoala in the Manchester City box.
The English club had a glorious chance to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute but Chloe Kelly missed from 12 yards after they were awarded their own penalty.
Jennifer Hermoso wrapped up the scoring for Barcelona in the 86th minute to give Manchester City a Herculean task in the return leg in England next week.
