Edo 2020: Big Brother star Edwards wins bronze
Reality television star Mike Edwards won a medal at the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival on Sunday evening as the few fans at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City cheered him on.
Edwards, who was the runner-up in the popular show Big Brother Naija in 2019, was the star attraction at the stadium during an intense evening of action.
However, he could only finish third in the men’s high jump final to win the bronze medal for Rivers State.
David Aya of Delta State won gold in the event, while Cyprian Oyedele of Lagos State won silver.
In the men’s 400m, Delta State claimed another gold medal through Chidi Okezie, as Edidiong Udo of Akwa Ibom won the 800m men’s gold.
Rivers State’s Ebubuchukwu Ugokwe won the top prize in women’s discus, while Clifford Orusa of Oyo won men’s discus gold.
Away from athletics on Sunday, Rivers State’s Kemi Oluwasegun won the gold medal in the women’s wheelchair tennis event, beating her Delta State opponent Omisore in the final.
In the overall medals table, Delta extended their lead at the top over host Edo State.
As at 9pm on Sunday night, Delta had 207 medals, made up of 83 gold, 64 silver and 60 bronze.
Edo had 193 medals in all: 67 gold, 66 silver and 60 bronze.
Bayelsa remained in third place with 37 gold, 32 silver and 35 bronze, with its neighbour Rivers fourth (21 gold, 22 silver, 32 bronze).
Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, Kano, Oyo and Imo completed the top 10 positions.
As at Sunday night, only Jigawa and Taraba states had not won any medals.
