The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has implored politicians from all political parties to help save the country’s hard-won democracy.

The National Chairman of NNPP, Prof. Rufa’i Alkali, made the call at a news conference on Sunday in Abuja.

Alkali accused some political parties of engaging in act capable of subverting the will of the people, especially, against the NNPP.

According to him, members of our party, as law-abiding citizens, resisted all forms of provocation in order to keep the polity cool.

“We have gone to great lengths to put our teeming members and supporters under serious control, even in the face of unwarranted provocation,” he said, referring to Kano and Taraba.

“However, our concern and fear is that the patience of our members and supporters is nearing its limit.”

“And it is past time for well-meaning Nigerians and thought leaders to call these agents of darkness in political parties to account in order to save our nascent democracy from their evil activities.”

“NNPP has been preaching the message of peace and harmony to all our members and followers nationwide since the beginning of the electioneering for the 2023 general elections.”

“We have faithfully abided by the letters and spirit of the National Peace Accord championed by the National Peace Committee led by retired Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar” (NPC).

“And, during the five months of political campaigns, our party, the NNPP, was never found to have engaged in political violence, or wanton killings or destruction of public property.”

Alkali went on to say that even in the face of extreme provocation, NNPP members kept their cool.

“Our party’s throngs of supporters across the country were always under strict orders not to be provoked or to take the law into their own hands.”

“Unfortunately, agents of destabilization mistook our gentleness for stupidity or cowardice,” he explained.

Alkali stated that the party also completely rejected the results of the Taraba governorship elections.

According to him, this matter had already been addressed, and information had been provided to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“We urge the electoral umpire to immediately correct this injustice done to the NNPP and our governorship candidate in order to bring lasting peace and stability to Taraba,” he said.

“It is disheartening that, in the twenty-first century, 63 years after political independence and 24 years into the current democratic dispensation, some political elites in Nigeria continue to have this terrible and unholy attitude toward obtaining power at any cost.”
