Before the swearing-in ceremony on May 29, the Reformed Oodua People’s Congress (Reformed) has urged security agencies to immediately step up security around President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement released on Friday, the group’s national president, Dare Adesope, said that this was necessary in response to alleged threats made by some politicians who continue to oppose his victory and the impending inauguration.
Adesope urged the security agencies to be vigilant while specifically mentioning the Department of State Services and Defence House. He also pleaded with resentful politicians to refrain from inflaming the polity with their statements.
He contends that Nigeria cannot afford to regress after the election, where winners were declared.
Many people, according to Adesope, anticipated that the election would end in bloodshed, but “we thank God that all went well and tension doused.”
The reformed OPC leader continued by saying that even though there was no perfect system in the world and the election might not have been flawless, it was surprising that some individuals could still be inciting the populace against the incoming president and his inauguration.
The OPC (reformed) would like the security agencies to be aware of the fact that “those threats are too sensitive to be ignored and should therefore take proactive steps,” he said.
Although Adesope pointed out that the candidates of the political parties who felt wronged had the right to contest the results, she advised them to do so within the bounds of the law.
“Since they have already filed petitions in court, they should let the court handle its business while we all wait for the decision rather than for anyone to now be suggesting interim government, which is not only undemocratic but also against Nigerian law,” he continued.
