Adebola Sodiq, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has been detained by Ogun State police officers for raping a 20-year-old woman.
According to Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Oyeyemi, Sodiq was apprehended on Friday at Owode Egba in the state’s Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.
The victim was allegedly lured into the room by the suspect under the pretense of buying her a gift before she was raped. He was detained as a result of the victim filing a report with the Owode Egba divisional headquarters.
It was learned that on May 9, the suspect—her friend’s boyfriend—came to her apartment and asked her to follow him to the village intersection so he could buy her a gift in honor of her recent birthday.
As they were leaving, the suspect asked her to accompany him to the school’s grounds so he could pick up his wallet.
Oyeyemi claimed that despite her pleading and cries for mercy, the suspect unlawfully had carnal knowledge of her when they arrived at the Agbajege village school compound.
“After receiving the report, Olasunkanmi Popoola, the DPO for the Owode Egba division, instructed his detectives to track down the suspect, who was later detained.
“During questioning, the suspect confessed to committing the crime but insisted that he was unaware of what had overtaken him at the time.”
The victim was taken to Owode Egba general hospital by the police, according to the police spokesman, for medical attention.
