Smart Adeyemi, a senator for Kogi West, has urged the incoming administration to look into the circumstances surrounding the naira redesign policy.
Adeyemi specifically urged Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, to see to it that CBN Governor Godwin Emiefiele is summoned for questioning in order to identify those responsible.
The lawmaker lamented the suffering Nigerians endured while the policy was being implemented as a guest on Friday’s episode of Channels Television Politics Today.
Adeyemi responded, “I will call on Emefiele and others to come and explain what happened and what was the reason behind the redesigning of the naira notes,” when asked what he would do if he were president.
Because they couldn’t access their money, people suffered strokes and died during that time. And if you and I both survived, shouldn’t we not be concerned about those who perished from causes not of their own making?
He claimed that “some people die as a result of the circumstances at the time, that policy killed some people innocently.”
Adeyemi recalled that if the judiciary hadn’t acted swiftly, the situation might have spiralled into anarchy.
The redesign of the naira, he continued, was a deliberate effort to thwart Tinubu’s bid for the presidency.
“Tinubu should not forget this, as the deliberate attempt was to prevent the APC from winning,” he said. We were informed that the naira has been redesigned now that we have prevailed in order to prevent a repeat, but where are the new notes that have been redesigned?
“They lose circulation gradually. The individuals in charge of the redesign of the naira notes assured us that there would be enough new notes in circulation in two weeks.
He claimed that “months after the Supreme Court’s ruling, up until this point, the so-called redesigned notes are disappearing.”
However, he asserted that when Tinubu’s presidency begins on Monday, May 29th, Nigerians should prepare for a new nation.
