The federal government and labour unions met on Monday and agreed to reconvene on June 19 to agree on an implementation framework for the resolutions reached.

Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who led the government delegation, made the announcement at the conclusion of a meeting between labour and government representatives at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He stated that the meeting agreed on a seven-point resolution to mitigate the impact of the removal of subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, on Nigerians.

“The Federal Government, the TUC, and the NLC will form a joint committee to review any wage increase or award proposal and develop a framework and timeline for implementation.”

“The Federal Government, the TUC, and the NLC will review the World Bank-funded cash transfer scheme and propose that low-income earners be included in the programme.”

“The Federal Government, the TUC, and the NLC will resurrect the CNG conversion programme previously agreed upon with labour centres in 2021 and work out the details of implementation and timing,” Gbajabiamila said.

According to reports, compressed natural gas (CNG) is a fuel gas primarily composed of methane that has been compressed to less than 1% of the volume it occupies at standard atmospheric pressure.

It is the cleanest-burning fuel available today, resulting in less vehicle maintenance and longer engine life.

Gbajabiamila also stated that the meeting agreed to review issues impeding effective education delivery and propose solutions for implementation.

“The Labour Centres and the Federal Government will review and establish a framework for the completion of the nation’s refinery rehabilitation.”

“The Federal Government provides a framework for road maintenance and rail network expansion across the country.”

“All other demands submitted to the Federal Government by the TUC will be assessed by the joint committee,” he said.

He emphasised that the NLC agreed to suspend the strike notice immediately in order to allow for further consultations, as well as to continue ongoing engagements and secure resolutions.

The resolution was supported by the NLC and TUC Presidents and Secretaries, as well as Ms Kachollom Daju, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The federal government had previously obtained a court order preventing Labour from launching a nationwide strike on Wednesday.
