The Youth Party (YP) is a new political party that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered. The Youth Party (YP) is a new political party that has been registered by National Commissioner and Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Festus Okoye, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, made this revelation in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

According to report, this development increased the number of officially recognised political parties in the nation to 19.

Additionally, according to our source, INEC deregistered 74 political parties on February 6, 2020 due to their poor performance in the 2019 general elections and subsequent reruns across the nation.

The Fourth Alteration to Section 225(a) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, gives the commission authority to deregister political parties in addition to the existing provision for the registration of political parties, according to INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

91 political parties competed in the 2019 general elections, while a further party, the Boot Party, was registered as a result of a court ruling after the election.

In his comments on Thursday, Okoye reminded that the Federal High Court’s decision from 16 October 2017 allowed the Youth Party (YP) to be established on August 16, 2018, which it was.

“The Youth Party approached the Federal High Court and obtained an Order blocking the commission from deregistering it after the commission decided to deregister some parties in accordance with Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“On appeal from the commission, the Court of Appeal set aside the Order of the Federal High Court, and on further appeal by the party, the Supreme Court set aside the party’s deregistration,” he stated.

According to the statement, INEC communicated with officials of the YP about the ways in which it would operate in accordance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act of 2022, and the Commission’s regulations and guidelines based on the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The commission has thus recognised the Youth Party (YP) as the 19th political party in Nigeria, with all the advantages and powers afforded political parties in Nigeria, he continued.
