Nigeria’s organised labour has put an end to its widespread demonstrations against the elimination of the fuel subsidy.
Festus Osifo, the TUC’s president, made the announcement of the suspension during an interview with Arise News on Thursday morning.
According to Osifo, the labour leaders had a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and obtained some government commitments to address the unions’ concerns.
The government has assured us that many things will be in place within the next week, so the protest has been called off, according to Osifo.
He claimed that the government had agreed to form a committee to review the minimum wage and to offer painkillers to lessen the effects of the rise in fuel prices.
According to Osifo, the unions will be watching to see if the government follows through on these commitments and will go back on strike if they are not.
The first nationwide demonstrations took place on Wednesday under the Bola Tinubu administration, which took office in May. Most of the protests were peaceful.
