Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, claimed on Saturday that Nigerian elections were rigged and urged Christians to actively engage in politics to clean it up.
He stated this at the Gospel City, Ogunmakin on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway in Ogun State at the 57th annual convention and 67th anniversary of The Gospel Faith Mission International.
Speaking on the topic of “The Roles of the Church in Nation Building at a Time Like This,” Obasanjo asserted that the church must step up to the plate as the world’s salt at times of instability, hopelessness, poverty, and depression.
“Corruption is the foundation of elections in Nigeria, and you cannot make something good with corruption as its base.”
When reflecting on the 1999 elections, he claimed that the local government election, where PDP was completely rejected, was the scene of his two first sorrowful and negative experiences.
The 1999 local government elections were “the two first sad and awful experiences that I experienced.”
They asked me where the money for the police, money for INEC, and money for DSS was a few days before the poll. I responded, “No money, money for DSS.”
Obasanjo stated that he did not make funds accessible because he believed that all government entities ought to have received compensation for carrying out their obligations.
When Obasanjo was president, the General-Overseer of GOFAMINT, E. O. Abina, recalled meeting him while he was teaching Sunday School during a visit to Aso Rock Chapel. He continued by saying that when they spoke upon his arrival at the convention center, the former President informed him to his surprise that he was still teaching Sunday School.
