Following a National Executive Council meeting at the University of Maiduguri, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has requested that, in the interest of maintaining industrial peace and harmony in Nigerian universities, the Federal Government, through the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, release outstanding promotion arrears owed to its members.

The news of employment racketeering carried out through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System alarmed the ASUU, according to a statement released on Thursday morning.

The following is from the statement: “NEC noted with serious concern that ASUU members are currently owed several months’ worth of promotion arrears due to distortions traceable to the coercive enrollment of academics on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information platform. NEC noted that despite numerous efforts by the union and university administrations, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation has not addressed the problem.

Therefore, in the interest of industrial peace and harmony, ASUU requests from the OAGF that the backlog of promotion arrears be immediately released to our members.

“NEC was troubled by reports of widespread employment racketeering carried out by administrators of the discredited IPPIS, including scandalous disclosures at the recent meetings of the House of Representatives’ Probe Panel on IPPIS. In violation of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act of 2003 and each university’s own guidelines for appointments and promotions, NEC noted that the dishonest trend has undermined the tradition of university employment. All illegitimate appointments sponsored by the IPPIS and its agents in Nigerian public universities are rejected by ASUU.
