In order to further explore the diplomatic route to resolve the political situation that followed the nation’s coup d’etat on July 26, President Bola Tinubu has approved the travel of a group of Islamic clerics to the Republic of Niger.
President Mohamed Bazoum was democratically elected and was overthrown in the coup; the coup leaders have held him in custody ever since.
Following a meeting with the religious leaders, led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, Tinubu, the ECOWAS Chairman, gave his approval for the travel on Thursday.
The clergymen travelled to the Aso Villa to inform the President of the results of their recent trip to Niger, where they spoke with the junta headed by General Abdourahamane Tchiani.
Sheikh Bala Lau, Sheikh Kabir Gombe, Sheikh Yakubu Musa, and Sheikh Mansur Sokoto were additional religious leaders who travelled to Niger last year.
In order to prevent a war in Niger, the Islamic clergy are working.
When the coup leaders refused to do so, ECOWAS threatened to use military action to compel the junta in Niger to restore Bazoum.
A restoration to democracy in three years was General Tchiani’s suggestion.
The plan, however, was turned down by ECOWAS.
